University of Warwick crowned UK Esports University of the Year for 3rd year in a row
Warwick Esports secure the “three-peat”
The University of Warwick have retained their title as UK Esports University of the Year, winning the award for a third successive year. The university secured the title after finishing first in the BUEC’s (British University Esports Championships) league table.
“Our first two wins were great on their own, but this third win really allows us to say that we're creating a legacy in university esports. A legacy of excellence and sportsmanship that future students will be inspired to surpass,” said Joshua Mankelow, president of Warwick Esports.
He added that the university is establishing a reputation within the university esports community for being the best around and that Warwick Esports want to lead by example by being advocates for diversity and inclusivity and acting as a stepping-stone into the esports industry.
Lastly, he added that the achievement would not be possible without Warwick Esports’ grassroots movement, fielding more than 40 teams of all standards during the year.
Universities earn points in the BUEC league table by competing in official and affiliated esports tournaments through NSE (National Student Esports). NSE was set up in partnership with BUCS (British University and College’s Sports) to serve as the official body for university esports.
Daniel Zeng, who was president of Warwick Esports for the duration of the competition, said: “I am incredibly proud of everyone's efforts over the past year. I handed the society over to a bigger and better team, and I have no doubts that we'll be pushing the limits for what university esports has to offer over the next year.”
The University of Warwick scored an impressive 3,027 points in the BUEC table, with a more than 1,000-point lead over their next closest competitor, the University of Southampton. The full standings can be found here
